I just got to campus and Kevin texted me to remind me to post about our short film, “Hundred Dollar Bill,” which plays today at the Rehoboth Film Festival, so if anyone on the Eastern Shore has nothing to do, check it out!

Then on Saturday, it plays at the Annapolis Film Festival. Kevin and I are both going to that and we are trying to get as many people to come as we can because winners are determined by audience vote. So if you aren’t doing anything Saturday, please please please head over to Annapolis. Entry cost $8 and it starts at 6:30p.m. (plays in MD Hall 308) If more than 10 people come I’ll pay for the first 10 I see!

      I just heard, “Hundred Dollar Bill,” mine and Kevin Meehan's film, was accepted into the Annapolis Film Festival and the Rehoboth Film Festival. The Rehoboth festival is November 8 through 12 while Annapolis is Nov. 10 through 13. So I guess that will be a pretty busy week for me. Also, according to Kevin, these were the last two festivals we needed to hear from. So that's it for phase I of submissions. Expect another push in the spring.

     Kevin hit up the Crested Butte Film Festival in Colorado this past weekend. “Hundred Dollar Bill” was accepted into it, but I didn’t find out until now that it was entered into the “student film” category.
     I think that’s retarded. First of all, I’m not a student, though I guess Kevin was at the time. But because it was “student films” they had entries from grad students and full features! I’m sorry, but it’s not fair to put a 5 minute short film up against a 2 hr movie!
      Needless to say, we didn't win anything.
     Although we didn’t place in the student film category, Kevin was excited about showing people our movie. (It helps to know that Kevin is a myspace whore and keeps meeting these young girls on it. Oh, and by "young" I mean like 18 and 19.) At one point he IMed me from Colorado and we had this conversation:
Kevin: yo
Scott: hi
Kevin: randel klieser called the film "intriguing"
Scott: i have no idea who that is
Kevin: directed grease
Scott: eww lame
Scott: he's gotta be like 100 or something
Kevin: hes like 60
Scott: 160 maybe
Scott: so that's it?
Kevin: it plays today
Scott: oh but he already told you what he thought?
Kevin: i was able to show him one on one
Scott: oh
Scott: that's wierd
Scott: were you in an alley
Kevin: hes cool, weve been hanging out
Scott: did he touch you in naughty places
Kevin: no
Kevin: i touched him
Scott: figures
Scott: you're sucha slut
Scott: did you meet him on myspace?
Kevin: HA HA, jerk.

Brian Plow was Kevin's advisor at Towson. He worked with us on "HDB."
Well Kevin was upset about the judges commetns from yesterday and so he emailed Plow who responded with:
Hi Kevin,
     Don't get discouraged -- it is one festival among many. They sounded as if the lack of clarity was a bad thing. I think it is a good thing and it is what drives the piece. I don't understand the last comments, "There was no real character development." How much character development can you have in a 5 minute film? He then goes on to mention positive things about the plot. The first comment is not appropriate because he/she doesn't give any specifics about what work must be done. It might be worth it to re-examine the dialogue mix (maybe do another test screening). If you want to come in over the summer and re-mix, maybe I can make that happen for you.
     The 2nd judge just plain didn't get it -- that's not your fault. Every festival has its own personality. These judges all seem like they are coming from similar points of view -- that can be dangerous for programming and give a festival limited appeal.
    Don't let it get you down. I've been rejected more than I've been accepted, as have almost every filmmaker I know. Keep going!!

We got an email today saying we didn't get into DC shorts. With that came three comments from judges:
     Judge 1: I liked the little twist at the end but I dont think that it was set up properly. The charecters were very unengaging which pushed all the weight onto the plot which wasnt strong enough to carry the entire film. The introduction of the police officer was kind of abrupt and confusing, I had trouble staying with the dialouge, I dont know if it was just kinda low and inaudible of if it was just altogether boring. The plot with some work could be a very strong short film....with work. the piece you have now is not finished.
     Judge 2: The tone is consistent, keeping the seriousness of the film. I found the entire film a bit confusing. I was not exactly sure what was going on throughout the entire film. One of the causes of this problem might be that there was too much cutting from scene to scene that kind of the mesh all the seperate scenes together forming a chaotic lump, mixing the storylines of the druggie, son, and cop. In the end, does the 100 dollar bill mean that the father found out that his son was doing drugs?
     Judge 3: There was no real character development. I thougth the closing of the circle was a necessity, so thank you for doing that. For much of the film, I was unaware that the cop was the father of the birthday boy. For a while I thought he was just a crook for pocketing the bill. So well done in that manner.

We got an email today saying:
     "The 12th Annual Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films & FilmMarket (Palm Springs ShortFest) this year received over 2400 submissions forconsideration.While we regret to inform you that your film was not chosento play at the festival itself, we were stunned by the extraordinary qualityof all the films submitted this year."
So that means no Palm Spring.

    The festival has now updated thier website with complete programing information. It seems we are in a student film category which I personally don't like. I don't know why they stuck us in it.

    "HDB" will screen on Saturday Aug. 12 at noon.

The Globe Screening - posted June 21 @ 9:17 a.m.
       I just want to send out a HUGE "thank you" to The Globe and everyone that attended last night's screening. It was awsome. The turn out was way bigger than we thought it was going to be and it was nice to be able to share the movie with people who have supported us for years as well as new people.
      Hopefully everyone that came last night enjoyed themselves. I know both Kevin and I saw a lot of faces neither of us had seen in years and it was just an awsome time.

      Tickets for next week's screening at The Globe are almost sold out. We are down to about our last 20.  We had 100 printed and we can't have more guest becuase of fire codes. So if you want a ticket, let us know ASAP.

      An Ocean City premier/test-screening will be held at The Globe. We haven't figured out exact dates or times yet. We'll work that out next week. Tickets will be sold in advance and press releases will be sent out to all the local media.

      Kevin and I are currently meeting with vendors about places in or around Ocean City where we can do a local premier of the movie. Of course for festival purposes if we were to do an "Ocean City Premier" we will need to refer to it as a "test screening" so as not to risk our 'world premier' status.

More Festivals - posted May 13 @ 2:26 p.m.
     We have sent "HDB" to the Coney Island Film Festival and the DC Shorts festival.  PLUS Palm Springs cashed our check so we know for sure they have it and we are dying to here from them.
     Palm Springs is the "sundance" of short films. There is a big selling market there and it would just be an awsome place to have it premier. What sucks is that we won't hear back from them until July 25th..

      We have just started submitting the film to festivals. The first two we sent it to are the Crested Butte festival in Colorodo and the Palm Springs festival in California. We should hear back from both by early June. Then there are about 10 other festivals we will submit to in the next month.

    We won the Towson Film Festival! We picked up "1st Place Narrative" and "Best of Festival." To be honest I'm really happy about this because last year I had a documentary that took "2nd Best of Festival" which left me bitter. So it's awsome to have gone back this year and won the whole thing.
