ScottKing.info Turns 2!

Today marks the two year anniversary of ScottKing.info. My little site-that-could has really started to come into its own. For starters, there are a lot of you out there who are regular readers and I love everyone of you! In the past year we had 143,782 hits. It’s still not super great numbers, but it’s solid and every month more new unique visitors show up. So I’m happy.

Another interesting factoid , is that in a year I’ve made 1,327 posts. That’s an average of 3.6 post a day or 25.5 posts a week.

Since we are looking back at the past two years I thought it would be fun to check out past incarnations of the site. For example when the site launched on October 29th, 2005 it looked like this:

I know, ugly! But in my defense, I had never used a website editor before. The site looked like that for about three months and then in January ’06 I received a copy of Dreamweaver and re-designed the site to look like this:

The above pic was the blog page and the pic below was the main page of the site.

That format of the site lasted until August 2006, when I implemented blogging software:

After that, I then spent two months doing codes (with the help of Mike DeVito of Th3rd World) and re-launched the site on Oct. 14, 2006 with the basic design that it still has today.

Of course it’s not always about looks. Content also matters. So I figured it would be fun to share my 10 most linked to posts. These posts are the posts that keep on giving and have brought in thousands and thousands of readers:

  • Televisions Top 10 Greatest Fatmen
This is the post that seriously brought in a bucket-full of new readers. Within 24 hours of posting it, it was picked up by USA Today and Entertainment Weekly. As a result I had over 13,000 visitors in a single day!
  • Diamond Barcodes
I was surprised about how many people linked to this post. In it I shared the email that Th3rd World Studios got form Diamond explaining the new barcode policy. Over 139 websites/blogs/people linked to this!
  • “The O.C.’s” Atomic County
In this post I talk about “Atomic County” a comic book that Seth Cohen created on “The O.C.” I mention the artist who did the work for the show and share a few pages. But what’s shocking is that Google LOVES this post. There isn’t a single day that goes by where someone around the world doesn’t google “Atomic County.” Apparently I’m one of the top listings, so this posts has brought in hundreds of new readers.
  • Brad Meltzer Q&A
My awesome interview with novelist and comic scribe Brad Metlzer was the first time I truly offered original material on ScottKing.info and it was the first that got linked to by other websites. The interview was mentioned on almost all the comic blogs as well as by USA Today and last time I checked it was even on Meltzer’s wikipedia page.
  • 2006 Baltimore Comic-con Evacuated
In this post I gave my first hand account of how the Baltimore comic book convention was evacuated. It was the first time I offered first-hand news of an event and everyone from Newsarama to The Beat quoted my post.
  • 2006 SPX Coverage
Similar to my Baltimore post, my coverage on the 2006 SPX was picked up by comic news sites and bloggers. But what truly makes me smile is that Scott McCloud… yes THE SCOTT MCCLOUD not only visited my site but left a comment!
  • Geppi’s Entertainment Museum
I post a lot of TV spoilers and share tons of news stories, but one thing I stay away from is doing reviews. I just don’t like doing reviews. My problem with reviews is that most of the time you’re just telling people what’s bad about something and I just don’t like brining constant negativity to my posts. But after visiting the Geppi Entertainment Museum I felt compelled to share my experience and as a result everyone and their mother decided to link to my review. It’s also listed pretty high up by Google when you search for the museum.
  • Bryan Lee O’Malley Q&A
I was a newspaper reporter and not to sound cocky, but I’m pretty good at interacting with other humans. I’m decent at reading people and generally speaking, I’m very polite. So I was really excited when Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of “Scott Pilgrim” agreed to do an email interview with me. I was then shocked when he acted like a dick in answering all my questions. Of course because he was such an ass, everyone decided to link to and quote this post.
  • Spider-Man Script Coverage
I’m surprised this post was picked up by so many people. “Coverage” is basically a critique of a screenplay that Hollywood studios pay people to do. They are normally kept super secret. So when I shared this confidential document, bloggers and entertainment news sites started quoting it right away.
  • Who Wants To Be a Superhero Scam?
Man was I bitter when I learned just how much of a scam “Who Wants to Be A Superhero” was! I made sure I shared every little detail and it’s the unveiling of that truth that made news sites and comic bloggers link to this post.

So what does the future hold for ScottKing.info? I’m not sure. This past summer I got the idea of starting an entertainment news site that would cover anything related to pop-culture. The whole site would be data-base driven (no static pages and would function like Variety.com or CNN.com does). The site would have staff writers, editors, and then I would oversee the whole thing. Currently, Mike and I are in discussion with some high-end fancy data-base coders and if everything comes together, a news site might launch within the next two years.

But who knows? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings.
