Judy Blume is a Genius

I’m a boy. So when in elementary and middle school I was busy reading “Lord of The Rings,” “Dragon Lance,” “Belgariad,” and just about every other fantasy series out there. So although I’ve read “Freckle Juice” and a few other of Blume’s books I had never ventured into the world of “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

So over the weekend I was in for quite a shock at just how amazing of a book “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is. It’s well paced, dialog is realistic, structure is great, and just about everything else is perfect, but what’s truly amazing is how true the book really is. The book was first published in 1970 yet the things she wrote about are still as on-target today as they were back then.

I know I’m a boy, but growing up I was super-close to my two cousins and all my friends were females so I definitely had a view into that “girls only” world. So when I read “AYTG?IMM” I had a ridiculously amount of flashbacks to back when I was in 6th and 7th grade. I mean even something so simple as the girls using their “secret” names were soooo true. All the girls did that back in the 80’s and even my niece and her friends do it now today!

I know the book sounds like a “girly” book and to a certain extent it is. But if you are even semi-interested in writing or just enjoy a well written book then you should give ““Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” a try.
