How to beat “Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers” Challenges
on June 18th, 2009Posted In: Video Games

Here is a simple walkthrough on how to beat the challenges in “Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers.” Doing these will take maybe 20 minutes and also net you the “Magic: The Puzzling” achievement for 10g, the “Devastator” achievement for 10g, and the “Puzzling Master” achievement for 20g.
Challenge 1: Garruk
- Use Double Angelic Blessing on your Skyhunter Skirmisher.
- Attack with Skyhunter Skirmisher.
Challenge 2: Elspeth
- Use Threaten on the Life Warden .
- Summon the Raging Goblin.
- Attack with all your creatures.
Challenge 3: Garruk
- Use Elvish Piper to bring out the Roughshod Mentor.
- Attack with all the Grizzly Bears.
- Wait for blockers to be assigned and then use all three Giant Growth on the Grizzly Bear being blocked by the Elvish Pathfinder.
Challenge 4: Chandra
- Play Megrim.
- Play Ravenous Rats.
- Attack with all creatures.
Challenge 5: Liliana
- Use Eyeblight’s Ending on the Nightmare .
- Play Elvish Eulogist and Elvish Warrior.
- Use Immaculate Magistrate’s ability on the Elven Riders.
- Attack with all creatures.
Challenge 6: Chandra
- Use Persuasion to damage opponent for one.
- Use Boomerang on Persuasion.
- Reuse Persuasion on Raging Goblin.
- Attack with all creatures.
Challenge 7: Nissa
- Use Terror on the Elvish Champion.
- Attack.
- Use the Flameblast Dragon’s ability to kill your Sprouting Thrinax.
Challenge 8: Lilana
- Play Pariah on the Angel.
- Play Wooly.
- Use to Brion to kill your Wooly thus killing the angel (afterward, Royal Assassin will kill Brion).
- Use one incinerate on Rat.
- Use one incinerate on opponent.
- Use Knight’s ability to pump itself up.
- Attack with your two remaining creatures.

first off in the number 3 challenge its a civic wayfarer not an elvish pathfinder.
second in challenge 6 you said “use persuasion to damage opponent” but you are really using prodigal pyromancer that was taken by the persuasion.
last off your way of doing challenge 8 is off by a little bit. I think you might have forgotten how pariah works.
play pariah on the angel
then play the woolly
then use brion’s ability on YOURSELF using the wolly
then incinerate rats
then opponent
use knights ability and attack for 6 damage on your opponents 6 life.
Challenge # 5
I dunno if I’m doing something wrong, but I’ve not been able to beat it. Liliana is always left with 1 life.
I play Elvish Eulogist and Warrior, then use Immaculate Magistrates ability on the Elven Riders, then Eyeblight’s Ending the Nightmare. Attack phase goes through and all creatures are blocked with the exception of the Elven Riders. At this point, my Elven Riders is a 12/12. Liliana has 13 life.
Is there a way around this?
Thanks, I was struggling on a couple!
DAVE – Challenge 5, wait for the last card to finish ‘sparkling’ and multiplying before you stop the clock and then play magistrate. You will get 13.
Dave– Challenge 5,
I think your problem is that you played Eyeblight’s Ending AFTER activating Magistrate. The catch here is you have a 3/3 Elf (forget the name) that puts 1/1 Elf Warrior tokens into play when you play any ELF spell. Ending is a Tribal Instant so it triggers the token generation giving you enough elves to pump the Riders to a 13/13 swing FTW!! Good Luck
Challenge 7: Nissa
I think there is a problem with this as Nissa is left with 1 as well…
Actually, the method for challenge 7 works perfectly. Make sure you are attacking with the Dragon to kill the Thrinax, you have to stop the timer in order to do so.
is there a glitch in my game, because on the eighth challenge I damage her to -5 but it still says she wins
Challenge 8: Lilana does not work the angel is alive so you cant win that Pariah does nothing
this is how you do it he forgot to say targeting yourself when using Brion Stoutarm’s
1. Cast Pariah on your opponent’s Platinum Angel
2. Cast Woolly Thoctar.
3. Use Brion Stoutarm’s ability, sacrificing Woolly Thoctar and targeting *yourself*, thus killing Platinum Angel
4. Cast Incinerate on your opponent’s Ravenous Rats
5. Cast Sangrite Surge on your Knight of the Skyward Eye
6. Attack with Knight of the Skyward Eye and Mistmeadow Sulk
7. Target your opponent directly with the other Incinerate.
That doesn’t work because the Royal Assassin kills your knight as soon as he taps to attack
Anyone have a solution to this? It’s killing me!
hmm i still dont get challenge 7 . how can you kill the thrinax wen the dragon abilety says i cant play it becose somting els is blocking it ???? ” an abilety is preventing you from playiong this card” is says
so what abielty is blocking me 4 using the dragon to kill trinax? and wen do i use teh dragon abilety ? i cant seem to get aroud that 1
aaa nvm
i found it out
you have to freez the game before the oponent blocks
In challenge 4 with chandra I have phage the untouchable and I can terror the creature that blocks it so shouldnt I win but i dont. Why come it doesnt let me win?
hmm i found a different way to beat challenge 8
cast both incinerates targeting assassin and ravenous rats cast sangrite surge on knight cast pariah on platinum pump knight ttack with knight and mistmeadow in response to dreads trigger sac knight tageting yourself kill platinum and then mistmeadow skulk deals leathal
Challenge 6: Chandra Nalar
How does taking the Goblin help anything? Still has plenty of creatures to block it, and they have double-strike!
Another way to do the final challenge:
1) Double Incinerate the Angel.
2) Use knights ability.
3) Use Sangrite on the knight.
4) Attack with all but Brion.
5) When assassin targets the knight, use brion’s ability to sac the knight targetting your opponent.
6) Win.
(Thats how I won anyways)
that did not work she still has 1 pint left retype it out to me plzz
I never came up with this solution because I always thought she will block the Mistmeadow Sulk with her rats, but gave it a try after reading it here and the a.i actually screws it because it “thinks” the activated assassin will sort it out and there is no need in blocking and “sacrificing” the rats.
Don’t know why louis didn’t win but perhaps she blocked with the rats in his game, for me the first solution didn’t work because she didn’t assassinate brion.

Goblin has Mountainwalk… AKA unblockable.

Basic rules of M:tG, Phage is still considered “blocked”. Whenever a block is declared, that block lasts even if either creature is removed from combat. Unless a card says “Remove target blocking creature from combat. The creature it was blocking is considered unblocked if this was the only creature blocking it” (which, to my knowledge, there is no card that says that).

is there a glitch in my game, because on the eighth challenge I damage her to -5 but it still says she wins
Liliana has Platinum Angel, Artifact Creature that when it is in play, you cannot lose and your opponent cannot win. You have to kill it off to win.
In challenge 6, why doesn’t Chandra block the raging goblin? She has several potential blockers. Doesn’t make any sense.
So on the last challenge against Nissa, I too have gotten her to -2 and still says she wins even though I have one remaining life. I simply cast one incinerate on her directly, beef up the knight with his ability and cast sangrite surge on him, and then use Stout’s ability to sacrifice the knight and deal that damage to Nissa…. and yet it doesn’t end the game even though she drops to -2… I have to finish my attack sequence (as if there were a point) and then it says I lose….strange
….so no sooner than I post I answer my own question… as long as Platinum Angel is in play she (Nissa) can not lose the match via the creature’s ability. So the angel must die in order for you to win.
In #5, I play the Magistrates ability on the Elven Riders. Then I play Imperious Prefect. Then I attack with everything, and use Eyeblight’s Ending to remove the blocker from the Riders. Two creatures with enough damage to do more than 13 points get through unblocked, but somehow Liliana never takes damage from both of them. I don’t see anything on her played cards that prevent her from taking damage. Why won’t this work?

Azalence – since the goblin king chandra has gives all goblins mountainwalk she can’t block the raging goblin since she herself has mountains in play.
LOLOLOL omg i love listening to you noobs this game has been out forever and you RUIN it by bringing these morons to the field anyway i found that all of the methods listed here work HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Just about to ask the same questions as Azalence then saw the answer! I like the way that these challenges need a bit of lateral thinking!
I wonder if thats the same Ashter that owned a comic book/card shop in Simi Valley!
@Brandon Its Civic Wayfinder not Wayfarer please know your cards before you talk shit about somebody else not knowing there cards. I understood what he meant when i saw the hand i was given so lay off him
There must be something wrong, when i tapped brian stoutarm to sacrifice wooly thoctar and destroy her platinum angel, the Royal Assassin did not destroy him. He actually waited and destroyed the Knight when i attacked instead.
The CORRECT way to beat challenge 8. The only other person that has this right on here was the post by CONMAN.
Royal Assassin will no longer kill Bryon (he never should have in the first place)
1. Cast one Incinerate on Assassin and one on the Ravenous Rats.
2. Cast Sangrite Surge on knight, then use Knights ability (he is now an 8/8).
3. Cast Pariah on Platinum Angel.
4. Atack with Knight and Mistmeadow, in response to Dreads trigger sacrifice the Knight, targeting yourself, to kill Platinum and then Mistmeadow Skulk deals the final 1 damage.
Challenge 10 (EXP 1)
Play Jagged Lightning (Deal 3 damage to the untapped Angel of Mercy and 3 damage to your own Mudbutton Torchrunner) Use the 3 damage from Mudbutton Torchrunner on Elspeth Tirel ..
Play Vengeful Firebrand
Attack with all creatures
Win
Your walkthrough for challenge number 5 isn’t correct.
If you play the Eyeblight’s Ending before the Elvish Eulogist and Elvish Warrior you can’t afford the warrior anymore. Therefore you need to play the Elvish Eulogist and Elvish Warrior first before the Eyeblight’s Ending to make it work.
Challenge 5: Liliana
Play Elvish Eulogist and Elvish Warrior.
Use Eyeblight’s Ending on the Nightmare .
Use Immaculate Magistrate’s ability on the Elven Riders.
Attack with all creatures.
The “timing’ moves may be a pain in the butt for some players.
Go into:
Menu >
Settings >
Gameplay Settings>
& turn “Simplified Targeting” to ‘OFF’. That will slow things down a bit and allow you to make choices on your time instead of spaztic spamming.
Donnie, thnx for the 8th challenge! Couldn’t do anything without your help! I’ve broken my brains!
Thank you Bigjohnstudd, i tryed every method on here to beat challenge 8, and yours was the only one that worked. People should really stop posting on how to do a challenge if it doesn’t work. Maybe next time, some of you could actually try your methods before posting them.
Challenge 4 is stupid. If I were Chandra, I would have blocked Phage the Untouchable and Crowd of Cinders. That would then make Chandra the winner.
Challenge 8 (a method that actually works):
Step 1: Use Incinerate on Royal Assassin
Step 2: Use Incinerate on Ravenous Rats
Step 3: Use Pariah on Platinum Angel
Step 4: Use Sangrite Surge on Knights of the Skyward Eye
Step 5: Use Knights of the Skyward Eye’s ability
Step 6: Attack with Knights of the Skyward Eye and Mistmeadow Skulk
Step 7: Stop Timer (immediately) after Knights of the Skyward Eye has dealt damage to Opponent
Step 8: Use Brian Stoutarm’s ability on Yourself with Knights of the Skyward Eye as the sacrificed creature
Challenge 9 (expansion 1):
1. Terror targeting the Wall of Air.
2. Summon an Etherium Sculptor (triggers +2/+2 to Glaze Fiend).
3. Cast a Howling Mine (0 mana) (triggers +2/+2 to Glaze Fiend).
4. Summon Master of Etherium (triggers +2/+2 to Glaze Fiend).
5. Cast a Loxodon Warhammer (triggers +2/+2 to Glaze Fiend).
6. Cast an Onyx Goblet (triggers +2/+2 to Glaze Fiend).
7. Attack with all four creatures.
8. Tap the Onyx Goblet to cause Jace to lose 1 life, defeating him.
Challenge 10 (expansion 1):
1. Cast Jagged Lightning, targeting the untapped Angel of Mercy and your Mudbutton Torchrunner (who’s triggered effect deals 3 damage to Elspeth).
2. Cast Vengeful Firebrand.
3. Attack with Bramblewood Paragon and Vengeful Firebrand.
4. Assign 2 points of damage from the Vengeful Firebrand to the Venerable Monk and 4 points to Elspeth.
Challenge 11 (expansion 1):
1. Play a Plains.
2. Attack with Ambassador Laquatus.
3. Play Condemn targeting Ambassador Laquatus.
4. Play Kiss of the Amesha targeting yourself.
5. Play Wrath of God.
-End your turn.-
-Liliana’s turn begins, ends.-
-Your turn begins.-
6. Play a Plains.
7. Play Ambassador Laquatus.
8. Use Ambassador Laquatus’s ability three times targeting Liliana.
-End your turn.-
The above solution to 11 doesn’t work because you lose when your second turn begins because you can’t draw a card. There is one card to begin with (Wrath of God), and you put one more there (Ambassador L.). Then you draw 2, remaining 0.
Anonymous 7/8/10
The piece you missed is that the Purity gets shuffled back in if it goes to the graveyard.
chrix on challange 11 I can’t play condemn ’cause it says that there are no suficient targets or something like that. what do I do?
Challange 8
This is how i won it doing a total of 11 damage:
1: Use both incinerate on the angel.
2: Play rip clan crasher
3: Activate the Knights ability
4: Play Sangrite on your knight ( Knight will deal 8 damage now )
5: Attack with all but Brion
6: When assasin targets your knight, stop time and use Brions ability targetting Liliana (the enemy), sacrificing your knight.
You play condemn when you Ambassador attacks
The grudge.
Not to use Laquatus skill, just ATTACK by him and in moment of attack, use ur Condemn on him.
There is no real way to beat challenge 8. The only reason you can is because the AI is stupid. If he just blocks with the Assassin before using its ability, you would not be able to do 9 damage.
I figured out a different way to complete challenge 8, but couldn’t do it due to the game’s annoying automatic tapping of lands. My way would have been:
- use 2 incinerates to destroy angel
- play wooly thoctar
- give it +3+3
- get Brion to hurl it at Liliana, doing 8 damage
- play the 2/2 haste
- attack with all three – she can only block 2, so dies
But however I do it, the computer always taps too may mountains and I can’t activate Brion’s ability *and* use both incinerates. Gah!
I suppose I should have realised there was another way to do it (or, in fact, several).
Thinking about it now, Royal Assassin might thwart my plan.
To play all those spells u need 6 red mana, but u only have 5 mountains, so stop complaining about the a.i. and learn to count
THANK YOU GUYS SO SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!!
Challenge 8 can also be beaten by doing the following:
Double incenerate the platinum
Attack with mistmeadow skulk
use knight ability and give it the +3/+3 buff, giving it a total of 8/8
Now use Brion to sacrifice knight and voila, you just won
…
wrong!
Rats block of the skulk…
when will u retards stop posting shit that does not work?
Does anyone know how to beat the new challenges from expansion #2, there are five of them?
Theres more than one way to skin a cat for challenge 6. Instead of using boomerang on persuasion to reuse it on raging goblin, you can also:
Tap Prodigal Pyromancer for 1 damage
Unsummon Chandras 2 fliers
Attack with all creatures for a perfect 5 damage dealt (even have enough mana left to use boomerang on something else or play your elemental)
Donnie you re the best!! thanks
let start with the ones of expansion 2,
1)garruk
1-equip the blade of the bllodchief to your vampire nighthawk
2-use feast of blood to destroy giant spider
3-play your swamp and return the 2 bloodghast
4-use both desfigure on you own bloodghast
5-attack with your vampire nighthawk that is 8/9, and the lifelink will make garruk the 16 points left
2)garruk
1-play selective exile, and exile all the cards
2-play treasure hunt
3-you may now have 31 cards on your hand, play a forest
4-play primal frenzy on marro
5-now you have 29 and marro has trample, attack with him, 29-17 left the 12 points you need to win
Challenge 13 (expansion 2):
You’ve duel agains Garruk again.
1. Play Selective Memory and exile all non-land cards.
2. Play Treasure Hunt
3. Play a Forrest.
4. Use Primal Frenzy on Maro so he gets trample
5 Attacke and get your fancy win
Challenge 16 (expansion 2):
1. Play Eladamri’s Call to pull Plated Geopede out.
2. Put it onto the battlefield with Elvish Piper.
3. Play Harrow (sacrifice a tapped land ofc). Choose any 2 lands except Mountains.
4. Play another Harrow (sac again a tapped land) and get 2 Mountains.
5. Activate Khalni Heart Expedition.
-Your Geopede 13/13 now-
6. Fling Geopede in Sarkhan Vol’s face.
Challenge 15 (expansion 2):
You’re playing against Tezzeret.
1. Skip your turn and let him attack you with his Angel.
2. Bring your Lothos to play at the end of your turn with Quest for Ula’s Temple ability.
-Tezzeret’s turn. He attacks you with an Angel again-
3. Play an Island.
4. Attack with Lothos.
5. Unsummon his Angel.
before you unsummon his angel, you need to play the other creature you have, becouse he uses a cancel to counter your boomerang, so that way y counter you creature instead
After he attacks me in step 2, he excommunicates my Lothos and kills me on his next third attack. What’s wrong?
Challenge 14 (expansion 2):
1. Play Evolwing Wilds to get last Island.
2. Play Brainstorm. Return any cards to your library except Excommunicate and Polymorph.
3. Use Excommunicate on his Phage the Untouchable.
4. Use Polymorph on his Golem and get autowin because of Phage’s ability.
I don’t know why but I can’t seem to be able to choose which lands tap for colorless mana and the game wants to tap all my mountains for this mana before I can use Brion’s ability leaving me unable to complete this challenge.
I finally beat challenge 8, I just did conman’s steps, thanks conman. After looking at my comment it seems ambiguous so let me explain a little bit better. Whenever I would activate the Knight’s ability it would tap 3 lands plus a forest, one of those three lands taped is always my last mountain while it leaves a plain untaped. The game chooses for me which lands to tap and I have no control. I need that mountain to remain untaped so I can use it to activate Brion’s ability. There is several ways to beat this challenge but all those other ways require me to have that one lone untaped mountain. Instead I have a useless untaped plain. It’s weird that we don’t have control over which lands to tap for the colorless portion of spell’s cost.
ok for challenge 8 this is what i did and it works.
1.Play both incinerates on Platuim Angel
2.Summon Wolly Thoctar
3.Use Sangrite Surge on Wolly Thoctar
Step four is a little trickey and can be done one of two ways.
4a. Attack with Your Knight of the Skyward Eye and Mistmeadow Skulk She will destroy the Knight of the Skyward Eye
4b. Attack with just Mistmeadow Skulk. It ened up being the same because she will not block it.
5. Use Brion Stoutram ability and throw your beffed up Wolly Thoctar.
This will win it i have done it numerous times and it all works out. I use all and 4a.
