Ocean City Commercial

Ohhh man! I nearly died of laughter last night when I saw the above commercial. That’s Big Rick(my roomate’s old dad and mayor of Ocean City). For whatever reason it aired on FOX during a “Simpsons” rerun. I also saw it advertised on Pop Candy (USA Today). If that wasn’t strange enough it sooooo looks like a Dharma video from “Lost.” WEIRD!

Ocean City Dough Roller Fire

Filed under: Ocean City — Scott King at 9:28 pm on Monday, March 31, 2008

Ocean City made the news over the weekend when Dough Roller on the boardwalk caught flames. No one was hurt and the damage wasn’t THAT bad, but what I find funny is that the every newspaper/online article I could find about the incident quoted people I know, including my own cousin:

The fire, reported about noon yesterday, resulted in no major injuries, said Jessica King, a spokeswoman for the Ocean City Police Department. A firefighter was treated for a minor eye injury, she said.

The other people always quoted were Big Rick (Rick Meehan the current mayor and father of my old roomate), Mathias (the former mayor and current county delegate), and Steve Price the OCPD PR guy. Makes me a tad homesick plus for a split second I actually miss my newspaper reporter days.

Sarah Rocks

Going out with Sarah tonight! Should be a crazy crazy time. She has friends from New Zealand visiting so we are doing the cliché Ocean City tourist thing. So in honor of that I decided this old old photo of me and Sarah from seven years ago. Of course… depending on how late the night gets, posts tomorrow may be scattered or delayed. Though in my defense, most of the news this week is nothing but recapping SDCC stuff, which I refuse to do.

Power has been out and it just came back on, but things are crazy so I probably won’t post till tomorrow. If you’re looking for San Diego Comic-Con news check out CBR or Newsarama. If you’ve read or heard about Ocean City on Fox News, CNN, and all the major networks… then give me till tomorrow and I’ll have be able to give you the full details that only locals know (I got the full scoop from one of my former co-workers at Ocean City Today).

Half a Chair

This is weird. I saw this at the beach a few weeks ago and I can’t seem to track it down on the internet. But basically its half a beach chair. It has two pointed pegs that you shove into the ground and it gives you back support so that you can sit on a blanket or in the sand. They are super light to carry and way less of a hassle compared to folding chairs.

Blueberries

Not much going on in the Entertainment industry, so here are so pics of Me and Sarah picking blueberries! We went yesterday and in an hour we managed to pick over 8 and a half pounds. What’s odd is that during the hour she only ate 3 berries and I ate a LOT more than that, but I still managed to pick .12 pounds more than her!

By picking them ourselves, we only had to pay $1.75 a pound. I’ve never bought a blue berry in my life, but Sarah says that’s SUPER SUPER CHEAP and well worth it. (Read on …)

Assawoman Bay

This is just a random pic of the bay I took a few days ago (Yes, it really is called the “Assawoman Bay”). For you non-locals, Ocean City has the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Assawoman Bay to the west, and the two bodies of water meet south of town at the Inlet (Ocean City connects to land on the northside of town at 144th street, right at the MD DE state line).

Donald Trump to Fire Miss USA?

Miss USA, formerly Miss Kentucky is having some trouble. It seems the pageant winner is under review and Trump may give her the boot.

The organizers of the Miss USA pageant said Thursday they are evaluating the “behavioral and personal issues” of the reigning winner and will decide her future within a week.

“I can’t really talk about it now,” Trump said. “But we have to make a decision. There is no question about that.

Now I meet her last spring when she and the other contestants were in O.C. filming a promo piece for the competition. From what I could tell she was much wilder than most of the other girls and even though she?s only 20 she defiantly had a strong relationship with alcohol. There were also rumors that she was big into coke, but I don?t know for sure if that?s true.

Scott King Show 4-ever!

It seems I?ll never escape the ?Scott King Show? (above: photo taken during the filming of the classic “Jolly Rogers” episode). For those of you who haven?t known me for years, back in highschool I did three seasons of ?The Scott King Show.? The first year started as improv/random things, like having a dead fish on the boardwalk. The following winter, Tom Green came out on MTV and since I didn?t want to be known as a ?Tom Green wannabe? we switched the show to be more scripted.

In college, I got recognized all time. That sounds odd since my show was just a standard cable acess show, but you need to keep in mind that it aired in the summers in Ocean City, so any tourist with a tv in a hotel could watch it. I was a huge hit with families that had young kids and then the drunks that needed something to watch at random hours of the night (the show aired on a loop so it ran about 12 times a day).

Well a few days ago I got this crazy email and I?m just going to cut and past it:

Hello Scott King-

My wife and I discovered your Web page ( http://www.scottking.info ) after doing a Google search for you. The reason we searched? We recently transferred and watched our home videos from VHS to Windows Media format. We filmed these videos while on vacation with our kids in Ocean City in 1999. At that time, we discovered your hilarious “Scott King Show” shows on some kind of public acces cable TV channel that Ocean City had. I pointed the video camera at the TV and filmed you and your little cousin making French toast, with you sabotaging her French toast, and doing other goofy things. We watched several of your shows and got a big kick out of them. I distinctly remember predicting that you would someday go into television as an adult.

Do you have complete copies of those shows form 1999?

Anyway, best regards from Greensburg, PA!

Stan Mohler, Jr.

Isn?t that crazy?

Then for the record I have almost all of my shows but they are all on VHS. As part of the re-design of the website I will be digitizing the episodes and posting them under the ?films” section but it will probably be a month or so before I get it all finished.

Election Results

[ABOVE: Norman Conway, Bennett Bozman, and Jim Mathias in Conway's office at the Maryland General Assembly, when I was there in March.]
The Primary Results for elections in MD are in. The two points of interest to me are the governor’s race and the State House of Delegates.
For Governor, Martin O’Malley received a good 40,000 more votes than Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. I know they are the only ones running, but after meeting and interviewing both, I sort of was hoping neither could win. When I met them, they were both overly cocky and did nothing but trash talk the other.
For the House of Delegates, in Worcester County, Jim Mathias (former mayor of Ocean City) received the most votes. Norman Conway got the second most. In Wicomico County, Conway had the most and Mathias was second….  So it looks like Mathias is in!
I didn’t even vote in the election but because I personally know Mathias and Conway I wanted both of them to win. Now that I think about it, I’ll probbally give Mathias a call later today before class and tell him "Congrad’s."
Note: Even better than those two winning is Sonny Bloxom losing! The guy has been a county commissioner for forever, but he is a bigot and a jerk so that makes me very happy.

Goodbye OC Today

octodayfrontlasts.jpg  I’m a little bummed. It seems my last two big articles didn’t make front page because some moron sunk his boat durring the White Marlin Open. …well the articles got blurbs on the front page, but it’s just not the same. Cry
Oh well. Though I bet Susan Can’t-Standa-Ya won’t ever get blurbs on big news breaking stories in Ocean Pines becuase I kicked her ass all year and she didn’t beat me once on a single story! ((Susan was my rival all year long and wrote for one of our enemy papers, but my boss… errr former boss, hired her to replace me… Though as everyone knows, no one can truly replace SCOTT KING.))

No more Marlins!

I just finished the last of my articles for the week! Wooooooooooooooooo hoooooooooooo. So now I’m going to sit back and do nothing… for today at least. Tomorrow I have a big meeting in Ocean Pines which will last hours. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

White Marlin Open

Filed under: Ocean City — Scott King at 8:30 pm on Monday, July 31, 2006

The White Marlin Open is next week, here in Ocean City. I’m not excited about it. In the 16 or however many months I’ve worked for the paper it was by far the worse experience I’ve had (the second worse was the crazy Romanian party with the Romanian ambassador but that’s a story for another day).

The WMO is the largest billfish tournaments in the world and one of the largest tournaments overall. Cash prizes last year were record setting with like 2 million plus being given out.

I’m very very very familiar with White Marlins because in the past year I’ve read tons and tons of reports about the stupid fish. The government was considering putting a ban on them so I got stuck with writing about it.

Beaching It

Filed under: Ocean City, Samantha — Scott King at 11:12 am on Friday, July 28, 2006

Wooo Hooo! Samantha was home last weekend and it was awesome!
The craziest part of the whole thing… ok one of the craziest parts is that she actually got me to go to the beach. I never ever ever go to the beach.
My problems is that I don’t like to be sandy. I don’t like to be hot and I hate tourist. So normally the beach and I just don’t click. I’ve not been in 2 or 3 years. I don’t even own a bathing suit.
However she gave me that Samantha smile and said she really wanted to go and I couldn’t tell her “no.”
We were only on the beach for an hour and a half so it wasn’t too bad. The problem I did have is that when at the beach I LOVE to swim. I can literally get in the water and stay there all day until I leave. But Samantha said the water was too cold and she really didn’t want to get into it for more than like 15 minutes.
So after an hour and half of being on the beach without getting in the water she started to get hungry and suggested we go back to her house, get food, and then swim in her mom’s pool.

[wicked sunburn samantha got only on her knee]
Now I wasn’t sure how it would go once we got swimming but we had a BLAST in her mom’s pool. First we spent like 20 minutes fishing out these scary ass beetles and spiders.
Then we played SilentMarcoPolo!
Oh my god we had so much fun doing something so stupid and simple like that. The way the game works is that it’s just like “Marco Polo” only instead of calling out and listening to where someone responds you do it without saying anything.
It sounds hard but it really isn’t. You just need to not only listen for when the other person makes any sort of splash but also for water moving.
We played the game for almost an hour and at one point Samantha’s stepdad came home and he got a kick out of watching us play.
Normally what happened is that we would play and lets say I was it with my eyes closed. Well I’d be feeling around the pool trying to find her and it turns out she’s literally right next to me, but I have no idea. Only because I’m so close and can’t find her she ends up bursting out laughing.
So between the beach and the pool we had a fun time.
